Josef Suk
Patron of this Festival

Divertimenti in Prague

We are honoured and thrilled to have the greatest living Czech musician, Josef Suk as the patron of our Festival. Mr. Suk, the greatest living Czech musician, a world acclaimed virtuoso, but also represents a direct link to the musical heritage of the Czech Republic. He is the grandson of the composer Josef Suk and the great grandson of perhaps the most famous Czech composer Antonin Dvorak. Mr. Suk has said he is delighted to be the patron of our string quartet Festival. We look forward to having him attend our concerts and are deeply appreciative of his support for us and commitment to the further continuity of the Czech musical scene.

The festival entitled "Divertimenti in Prague", serves as a showcase for today's leading Czech string quartets who, although acclaimed internationally, rarely have the opportunity to be presented in a dedicated festival in their home city as distinguished local ambassadors of music.

Prague has been home to many legendary string quartets over the years and the quartets to be presented in our Divertimenti in Prague festival are no exception, ranging from the celebrated Prazak Quartet, to the exciting dynamism of the young Herold Quartet.

This second year of this String Quartet Festival features four of the world renowned Czech Quartets and one concert giving an opportunity to hear two great sextets played by the Kocian Quartet and members of the Prazak Quartet. Three concerts will be held in the romantic garden setting of historic Villa Bertramka with the musicians playing on the terrace of the Villa. Two other concerts will be in the historic Lichtenstein Palace.

Divertimenti in Prague grew from an idea of Sasha Stepanova, a Czech Australian an international lawyer, working in Prague for 12 years and Vivienne Pittendrigh, an Australian living on the Greek Island of Corfu during the 2006 festival Divertimenti in Corfu. Vivienne has been organising this festival since 1992 in conjunction with Chamber Music Holidays which began in 1982. As we feel that Prague is one of the greatest musical cities worldwide, especially for chamber music, a new Festival dedicated to String Quartets would add to the already fantastic music scene here.
